GSD Workshop, Victoria, BC, Canada

September 17th - 19th 2004

This event brought together researchers and industry practitioners keen to solve current problems within the field of global software development (GSD). This venue provided the opportunity to not only discuss topical issues in GSD but also learn more about others' work and develop collaborative efforts. Participants from around the world met either in person at the SEGAL Labs at the University of Victoria (UVic) or remotely via internet videoconferencing.

Friday, Sept 17: Dinner and drinks, meeting at the Swans hotel (Pandora Avenue #506) at 6 pm. Note that we will meet in the pub and will have a reservation under “Damian”. We’ll be there all night, so late arrivals in town will find us there.

Saturday, Sept 18:

8:30am - 9:00am: Welcome note, coffee in the SEGAL lab (TEF 233).
9:00am - 10:30am: Introductions by the participants and brief presentation of GSD research. Please note that an opportunity to discuss your projects in detail will be provided on Sunday.
10:30am - 11:00am: Coffee break
11:00am - 12:00pm: Presentation by Heather Oppenheimer (State of the Practice at Lucent Technologies)
12:00pm - 1:00pm: Lunch in the SEGAL lab
1:00pm - 2:00pm: Presentation by Matt Bass (Research at Siemens)
2:00pm - 2:30pm: Coffee break
2:30pm - 3:30pm: Presentation by Rafael Prikladnicki and Elizabeth Hargreaves (A Taxonomy of GSD)
3:30pm - 4:00pm: Wrap up
5:00pm: Weather permitting, we will be having dinner on a sailboat out of Sidney. Otherwise, we will be having dinner at Milestone's Restaurant in downtown Victoria. Note that the reservation is at 8:30pm under Damian and that our group will be seated downstairs at the sea level.

Technology Enterprise Facility (TEF): Our meetings will be held in TEF 233. This building is located at the edge of the UVic campus (please see this map). Note that this is a secure building--an access card is required to enter it. If you are unaccompanied, you can gain access by dialing the number for TEF 233 listed on the entry system at the main door to the building which is beside the larger of the two parking lots.

Directions from Victoria airport to Hotel Grand Pacific (courtesy HGP website):

(Note that you can reach downtown Victoria via taxi (~$50), airport bus (~$15) or city bus (~$3)).)
Exit the airport on the main road
Make a left turn onto McTavish Road (T-Intersection)
Make a quick right onto the Patricia Bay Highway #17, heading south
Continue on Highway #17 into downtown Victoria
(Approximately 25 kilometres / 30 minutes)
The highway becomes Blanshard Street in Victoria
Continue along Blanshard Street, which after a small down hill and a sharp right bend becomes Belleville Street
Approximately three blocks after the sharp right bend, past the Legislative Buildings, you will find the hotel and main driveway on the left hand side at 463 Belleville Street

The parking garage is located off of Quebec Street, which can be accessed if you turn left just before the hotel onto Menzies Street, then right onto Quebec Street - at the end of the building, you will find the entrance to the underground parking garage
